Therapy for Burnout Recovery
Getting through the day has become an endless slog —
And after scrolling your way to sleep, it starts all over again with you waking up to the relentless exhaustion and dread. You’ve given your all and pushed through before, but now when you dig deep, there’s nothing left. Even for the most important people and parts of your life, there’s no more energy or motivation to scrape up. Irritable and impatient, you’re feeling more and more detached from your relationships, work, and sense of purpose.
Comparing yourself (not only to friends or colleagues, but also with how you used to be), you don’t understand why you just can’t keep up anymore. In the rare moments of downtime – whether you stay in constant motion or collapse completely – you feel suffocated by shame or scarily numb, but definitely not rested.
Being repeatedly let down as a helping professional by systems supposed to support you and your patients, students, or team
Startup life’s breakneck pace or the endless demands of climbing the corporate ladder while the microaggressions are accruing way faster than your PTO days
Battling with self-criticism, industry demands, or creative blocks as an artist until you’ve lost your spark, enjoyment, and connection to your unique voice
Continually juggling the weighty responsibilities of caregiving – whether professionally, parenting, tending to your aging parents, or all of the above
The accumulated toll of masking and minority stress for late-diagnosed Autistic or ADHDers navigating a neurotypical world
Negotiating career changes (e.g. being on leave or laid off, job searching or pivoting to a new field) surrounded by hustle culture and bootstrapping rhetoric
If that hits a little too close to home, you might be burned out from:
However you’ve ended up here, you’ve probably come up against the cruel paradox of burnout:
you’re exhausted and beyond ready for something to change, but figuring out what changes and how to make them takes energy you don’t have.
And that’s where therapy comes in.
Therapy for burnout isn’t effortless, but it is effective.
There’s no quick fix for the soul-deep depletion of burnout and, as you’ve experienced, conserving your energy doesn’t help when you’re all out. I may not be able to power you back up immediately, but I do create a compassionate, nonjudgemental space outside of the daily grindstone where together we can figure out a path to bring you back to life.
Burnout isn’t your fault and it can’t be solved individually through commodified “self-care” products and surface-level bandaids.
Drawing on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Narrative, and intersectional feminist therapy, I’ll focus on what’s feasible without letting us get boxed in by society’s limitations. Slowing down and stepping back allows us to check out the bigger picture.
Combined with zooming in on the nitty gritty of your days and what you need now, we’ll map out a life that energizes and excites you while also developing tangible changes to everyday routines, coping strategies, and supportive systems to ease your stress from day one.
Therapy with me doesn’t mean:
Patching you up solely to optimize your productivity
Piling even more onto your overloaded to-do list with an urgent deadline to feel better or have it all figured out
Setting you up to fail with a stock list of tips, patronizing advice, and unrealistic suggestions
Ignoring your the realities and strengths of your context and intersectional identities
Abstract daydreaming or trying to manifesting your goals without any practical action
Telling you what you should do or that there’s only one “right” option
Instead, together, we can:
Troubleshoot the immediate issues through collaborative, pragmatic experiments and creative problem-solving
Get curious about how imposed and internalized expectations are limiting you
Unearth your buried dreams and desires – because they do matter
Explore what your actual beliefs and values are, untangled from outside influence
Build up tolerance for uncertainty and internal tensions
Discover what rest, sustainable balance, and wellness are for you
Develop self-trust to make values-aligned decisions on your own timeline
If the thought of fitting weekly, 50-minute sessions into your bursting calendar just ratcheted up your stress level, it might seem counterintuitive, but therapy intensives could be just what you need.
Folks with irregular schedules, parents needing childcare, Autistics or ADHDers, and plenty others find it logistically and mentally more doable to reserve a longer or more concentrated block of time. Setting aside daily life to go deeper in a therapy intensive can accelerate your escape from burnout and into an intentional, vibrant life.
